Upgrading to WordPress 2.x

You might have noticed that a few things are broken around here; I'm upgrading WordPress and a few things need to be fixed.

I'm upgrading from WordPress 1.2.2 to 2.0.5 — quite a few leaps there, and not the smoothest thing I've ever done, given the small pile of little fixes, and searching for plugins that work with WordPress 2.x. I may write it up after I'm done, as there are a few things that shouldn't be omitted. Many thanks to the moderator at the WordPress forums, who happened to note that WordPress upgrades the database in both the 1.5 and 2.0 versions.

That said, I've been hit with increasing comment spam in the last week or so, and have tired of maintaining a block list — and, noting graywolf's comment at SEOmoz that, "Funny thing after getting rid of nofollow the link spam increased dramatically" — I may go back on my anti-nofollow thing and just leave it there.

That said, I haven't seen any blog spam since I upgraded (admittedly, only a few hours), so I doubt that I've fallen off any "she doesn't use nofollow" list yet; I'm guessing it's the "Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies" setting. Sweet.

One note: when you run upgrade.php, that page says:

This file upgrades you from any previous version of WordPress to the latest.

That would have been something to know.

At any rate, see you on the flip side. :)

I'm not finished with the site tweaks, but I did install Akismet, the spam-blocker, which has so far caught all the blog spam without my having to maintain my WordPress spam blocker list. Kudos to Matt and the crew for such a great plugin.
